Dele Sosimi Afrobeat Experience
Dele Sosimi, the Nigerian-British Afrobeat Ambassador, Musician and Educator, has been at the heart of the global Afrobeat scene since relocating to the UK in December 1995. Having started his musical career with Fela's Egypt 80 band in his teens, he then teamed up with childhood friend Fela's son Femi Kuti (back in the late eighties) to kick start the Positive Force - touring, recording and performing worldwide. Over forty years later, he remains a tireless ambassador for the unique musical movement all over the world. His blend of complex funk grooves, traditional Nigerian music, African percussion and an underlying sense of jazz combines with his virtuoso keyboard skills and rhythmic singing to make him one of the most respected Afrobeat authorities of his era.
Hackney-born and UK-based Dele has performed all over the planet, from the Montreux Jazz Festival to Mawazine Festival in Rabat Morrocco; Ollin Khan in Mexico, South Korea and the Copenhagen Jazz Festival to name a few. London's Jazz Café has said before “we're honoured that for so long we've been able to call Jazz Café the home of Dele's seminal afrobeat orchestra.” Dele was also Afrobeat music consultant for the National Theatre's production of Fela!, often performed with the late great Tony Allen.
"The love and passion I have for composing, writing, performing and teaching Afrobeat Music is my main motivation," says Dele, adding; "my aim is to build upon the rich heritage of music worldwide by creating opportunities for young people to learn. I want them to experience Afrobeat forms of music and music-making activities that will expand knowledge and broaden the horizons of the musicians young or old."
Support from The Joe Garland Band.
Headed by guitarist Joe Garland, this talented group of young musicians from London perform boisterous, groovy jazz funk and fusion in the vein of the Yellowjackets, John Scofield and Tribal Tech. WHO'S PLAYING?
Personnel
Hattie Whitehead: vocals and guitars
The band is fronted by the extraordinarily talented Hattie Whitehead, who not only sings masterfully with Joni’s pitch-accuracy, poise, and dignity, but she also plays guitar much with the mannerisms of Mitchell (incorporating various open tunings - which lend an instant authenticity to the colour of the songs). Hattie grew up surrounded by music and musicians - her father is the outstanding saxophonist, Tim Whitehead - and has a career as a singer/songwriter outside of this band. In 2016, she won the ‘Emerging Talent’ competition at the world-famous Glastonbury Festival. Her original songs have been listened to hundreds of thousands of times on various streaming platforms.
Pete Oxley: guitar
Pete grew up in a family of classical musicians, fell for jazz in his late teens, went on to study jazz at the Leeds College of Music, then moved to Paris in his mid twenties. It was there that he began gigging intensively and developing his career as a guitarist, composer and bandleader. He has produced 16 albums of critically acclaimed original music (including 7 with the Swiss guitar virtuoso, Nicolas Meier) and is one of only a handful of British composers to have their works included in the ‘European Real Book’ (Sher Publications). The Oxley-Meier Guitar Project continues to record and tour extensively throughout the UK and Europe.
Ollie Weston: saxophones
Since graduating from Leeds College of Music, Ollie has had a diverse career which has included education, session work and live performance. In the former of these, Ollie teaches at the Guildhall (London) and has major tutorial books published by Schott Music under the heading, ‘Exploring Jazz’. In the latter, Ollie has toured all over the world with such outfits as Amy Winehouse, Tim Minchin, Bonobo and the Nelson Riddle Orchestra. He has also worked extensively in the West End, performing in Chicago, Dream Girls and in two critically acclaimed seasons at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre.
Chris Eldred: piano and keyboards
Chris first came to prominence while playing in the National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NYJO), from 2008 to 2014. In the midst of that period, he was winner of the 2011 Yamaha Scholarship Award for Outstanding Jazz Musicians and graduated in the same year from Trinity College of Music with first class honours. With NYJO, he performed many high-profile gigs (such as at the Albert Hall Proms) and came to the attention of such established masters as Mark Lockheart, Jean Toussaint and Salena Jones, with whom he subsequently worked. He is now a regular performer at Ronnie Scott’s and is one of London’s most in-demand pianists.
Dave Jones: electric basses
Dave is one of the most brilliant bass players - on both electric and acoustic basses that the UK has produced! His deep musicianship has led him to work with, amongst others, John Etheridge, Bill Bruford, the BBC Big Band, Jacqui Dankworth, Willard White and Scott Hamilton. He is bandleader, arranger and composer of the ‘Dave Jones Nonet’, comprising the creme de la creme of UK jazz musicians. Dave is continually active in jazz education leading many courses at Richmond Jazz School where he also previously led the faculty and he is also regularly invited to teach on a number of international jazz summer schools.
Rick Finlay: drums
Rick’s career has seen him being perpetually occupied, dividing his time between London’s West End, education and performing as a jazz musician. In the former, Rick held the drum chair at Blood Brothers for twenty years and also played for The Little Shop of Horrors and Chess Time. As a freelancer, Rick has performed on many prestigious TV shows, including Parkinson, Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway and The Late Show. Rick has, for several years, been hosting the ‘Just East Jazz Club’ in North London, where he has accompanied most of the UK’s jazz glitterati!
Marc Cecil: percussion
Marc Cecil is a musician whose career has seen him work in myriad styles, performing at all sorts of premier venues, such as The Royal Opera House, Wembley Arena, The 02, Glastonbury Festival, The Jazz Cafe - Camden and Ronnie Scott’s. He was a member of "King Salsa”, the UK’s premier 12 piece salsa band for 17years. His extensive theatre work includes seasons with: Blood Brothers (west end), Billy Elliot (west end), Saturday Night Fever (west end), Footloose (tour), Streisand The Story (tour), The Chicago Blues Brothers (tour), Million Dollar Quartet (west end) and The Carpenter’s Story (tour).
In the jazz arena, Marc has worked with a ‘who’s who’ of top UK musicians, including: Jason Rebello, Neil Angilly, Nigel Price, Art Themen, Jim Mullen, Picante, Jacqui Hicks, Noel McCalla, Liane Carol, Lily Dior, Geoff Gascoyne, Laurence Cottle, Alan Barns, Henry Lowther, and the Derek Nash Quartet.
Marc’s extraordinary drive, groove and use of sonic colours is an essential element of the whole Hejira soundscape

New Orleans Jazz: The Alvar Tree Frogs
A very welcome return from The Alvar Treefrogs for joyful, New Orleans jazz in the Courtyard at the historic Abbot’s Hospital on Guildford’s High Street.
Born out of an idea to breathe life into music long forgotten, music that made the streets of New Orleans a place to dance and party to in the 20s, 30s and 40s, music that is so hip you’ll want to hop around and dance to it.
In their words, “The band was born on Alvar Street, New Orleans, where one night, tired and happy, we listened to the Treefrogs singing their song. It then took 8 years to find the right musicians and to get the music just right. The players needed to swing, sing and love a frog based pun. We found them!!! Ever wanted to sing about eggs and butter, about Garbage Men, about your Aunt Tilly? We are your band!! “

WHO'S PLAYING?
Children of the Kingdom - a new generation of gospel music.
10 piece choir plus band
Children of the Kingdom, or CK Gospel Choir as they're more commonly known, are a 30-piece group from London, UK, who are united by their love of gospel music. They believe that Gospel music is for everyone.
The group was started in 2007 by Harlano Weekes. Harlano has performed with some of the biggest names in world music such as Mariah Carey, Stevie Wonder, Leona Lewis, Enrique Iglesias, Lulu and Phil Collins.
"I wanted to create something that was true to my gospel roots but that was also different, new and exciting. I also knew that I wanted this to be something where we were taking UK gospel music to new areas. I knew so many talented singers that I thought that we could make a difference together.
Today CK Gospel Choir are a full time professional and established force in the European gospel scene. As well as performing at venues such as the Jazz Cafe, the Pigalle Club and Handlebeurs, they have also provided backing for high profile and diverse artists such as Rod Stewart, Alexandra Burke, Beverley Knight, Peter Andre, Mica Paris, Alfie Boe, Josh Groban, Ella Henderson, Patoranking and Marsha Ambrosius.
The group takes their musical direction from the singers involved. "We have so many different styles of singers and musicians that it has become only natural to mix traditional gospel with jazz, soul, blues, classical and latin genres. As we evolve and grow, so does the sound of the choir"
CK Gospel Choir, with their unique blend of close harmonies and "gospel fusion" regularly perform their Touring show around the UK and Europe and can also be hired for all occasions such as Tours, private functions, weddings or church events.
"I really like the versatility of this group. One minute we're performing on stage in front of thousands of people at a festival and the next we're performing at a small party. We enjoy everything we do and bring ur energy and intensity to EVERY performance"

Her career took off when she was asked in the early 2000’s to join iconic UK trumpet player Humphrey Lyttelton's band, with whom she recorded and toured worldwide for four years. This led to her not only establishing her own bands but to appearing as a soloist with an impressive array of high-profile artists, including the likes of US stars Scott Hamilton, Warren Vache and Bucky Pizzarelli as well as many of the finest UK musicians. More recently she has also been involved in performing with larger ensembles including the Guy Barker Big Band at the BBC Proms, the Stan Tracey Big Band and the Ronnie Scott's Jazz Orchestra.
With six albums to her name as leader she has won the British Jazz Award for best tenor saxophonist on a number of occasions and has been a nominee in the Rising Star category of the US Downbeat Critics Poll for baritone sax in both 2018 and 2019.
For the lunchtime jazz performance, Karen will be joined by GARETH WILLIAMS, one of the UK’s leading jazz pianists, and Marianne Windham on bass
The lunchtime jazz is held in the Cafe at the Guildford Institute, which boasts a baby grand piano as well as delicious food. Food is served from 12 to 2pm, followed by live jazz performance from 2pm to 3pm

Tony Kofi/Denys Baptiste
Two of the UK!s most acclaimed saxophonists, Denys Baptiste and Tony Kofi, reunite for a dynamic project celebrating one of the most iconic front-line partnerships in jazz history: Julian "Cannonball” Adderley and John Coltrane.
The original LP was while Cannonball and Coltrane while working with Miles Davis. Miles had gone AWOL and Cannonball used the free time to cut a disc with classics including, Limehouse Blues, Stars Fell on Alabama and Grand Central. The album was created in the same year as both Kind of Blue and Giant Steps, two of the most important jazz records in jazz history.

WHO'S PLAYING?
Denys Baptiste – Tenor Saxophone
Denys Baptiste is one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary British jazz. Emerging from the Tomorrow!s Warriors programme in the 1990s, he quickly established himself as a formidable improviser, composer, and bandleader. His early albums earned major acclaim, with nominations for the Mercury Music Prize and wins at the MOBO Awards and British Jazz Awards, marking him as a leading creative force.
Baptiste!s playing combines technical authority with emotional depth, drawing from the Coltrane tradition while forging a personal, contemporary sound. He has collaborated widely across the jazz spectrum—from international greats to groundbreaking UK artists—and is celebrated for projects that blend spiritual jazz, Afro-Caribbean influences, and deeply melodic lyricism. His commanding tone and adventurous approach make him an ideal interpreter of the Coltrane legacy.
Tony Kofi – Alto Saxophone
Tony Kofi is renowned as one of the UK’s finest alto saxophonists, known for his powerful sound, fearless improvisation, and deep-rooted connection to the jazz tradition. A graduate of the legendary Berklee College of Music, he has built an extensive career performing with the likes of the World Saxophone Quartet, Courtney Pine, Abdullah Ibrahim, Branford Marsalis, and many leading UK ensembles.
Kofi has released a string of acclaimed albums, including tributes to Thelonious Monk and Cannonball Adderley, and has been recognised with numerous awards including Best Instrumentalist at the Parliamentary Jazz Awards and multiple wins at the BBC Jazz Awards for his quartet album The Silent Truth. His dynamic stage presence and commitment to musical storytelling place him firmly within the lineage of great post-bop saxophonists—making his partnership with Denys Baptiste both historically aware and electrifyingly fresh.
Bruno Heinen – Piano
Equally at home supporting Lee Konitz or Roy Hargrove at the Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club as he is playing with the London Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican conducted by Sir Simon Rattle, Bruno Heinen comes from three generations of classical musicians. Bruno Heinen started playing piano at the age of four and started composing pieces early on. He was introduced to the world of jazz through the music of John Coltrane and Bill Evans by his uncle (jazz pianist Johannes Heinen) in his late teens. His compositional voice has been informed by his love of composers from Duke Ellington to Béla Bartók and from Wayne Shorter to György Ligeti. Professor of jazz piano and composition at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music, Bruno has been described by The Guardian as "eclectic, eccentric and unobtrusively erudite"
Mikele Montolli – Bass
Italian-born bassist Mikele Montolli has become a key figure in London!s contemporary jazz and improvised music community. His warm tone, rhythmic strength, and ability to move seamlessly between groove and abstraction provide a solid yet flexible foundation for the front line.
Winston Clifford – Drums
Winston Clifford is one of the UK!s most in-demand jazz drummers, celebrated for his creativity, responsiveness, and deep swing feel. His intuitive sense of dynamics and interaction ensures that the music remains vibrant, propulsive, and continually evolving.

Bill Bruford & the Pete Roth Trio * SOLD OUT *
A unique evening with legendary prog-jazz drummer and Guildford Jazz Patron BILL BRUFORD who set the standard for creative rock drumming with Yes and King Crimson before returning to his first love, jazz, with multiple editions of his band Earthworks and now with the Pete Roth Trio.

PRT strives for an intimate, relatively unscripted music that thrives in small places and dark corners. Jazz, funk, contemporary classical, Dvořák. Nothing is sacred. It’s not retro. It’s not comfortable. It’s just brilliantly unruly.

WHO'S PLAYING?
The Pete Roth Trio, featuring Pete on guitar, Stefan Redtenbacher guesting on bass, and the incomparable Bill Bruford on drums offers a near-jazz experience that is intimate, improvised, and deeply interactive. The music unfolds as a conversation between players and audience, where every performance becomes a unique exploration of sound, texture, and connection.
Roth’s original compositions, such as Dancing with Grace, the Trio’s collaborative works like Part of the Charm and Looking Forward to Looking Back, or their reinterpretation of masterworks such as Dvořák’s Largo from Symphony No. 9, offer just a few gateways into the creative world of the Pete Roth Trio, a world that will likely reshape your perspective on what the guitar trio format can achieve.
Bill Bruford
Bill Bruford first gained prominence as a founding member of the progressive rock band Yes. After leaving Yes in 1972, Bruford spent the rest of the 1970s recording and touring with King Crimson (1972–1974), Roy Harper (1975), and U.K. (1978), as well as touring with Genesis (1976). In 1978, he formed his own group, Bruford, which was active until 1980.
During the 1980s, Bruford returned to King Crimson for three years (1981–1984), collaborated with several artists (including Patrick Moraz and David Torn), and formed his own electric jazz band Earthworks in 1986. He then played with his former Yes bandmates in Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe, which eventually led to a very brief second stint in Yes. Bruford played in King Crimson for his third and final tenure from 1994 to 1997, then continued with a new acoustic configuration of Earthworks.
In 2009, Bruford announced his retirement from professional drumming. He pursued other projects, including the operation of his two record labels, Summerfold and Winterfold, releasing an autobiography, and speaking and writing about music. In 2016, Bruford received a PhD in Music from the University of Surrey. That year, Bruford ranked No. 16 on Rolling Stone's list of the "100 Greatest Drummers of All Time".In 2017, Bruford was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Yes.[In 2022, after a 13-year hiatus, he returned to live performance as a member of the Pete Roth Trio.

Jazz Samba!
“Their love of music and samba oozed from every note played, and the final encore & applause reflected the joy given out by them to a very grateful audience” - Ronnie Scott’s
Jazz Samba takes its inspiration and name from Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd's ground-breaking 1962 album, the first ever fully-fledged bossa nova album recorded by American jazz musicians which topped the LP charts on its release and produced its own pop hit single – ‘Desafinado’
Led by John Wilson's star soloist MARK CROOKS on sax and clarinet and the award-winning guitarist NIGEL PRICE, with JOHN CERVANTES (piano), MARIANNE WINDHAM (double bass) and DEMI GARCIA SABAT (drums/percussion), this is a joyous celebration of the blending of Brazilian rhythms, jazz attitude and the majestic compositions of Antonio Carlos Jobim, Joao Donato and Sergio Mendes.

WHO'S PLAYING?
Mark Crooks is a lyrical and passionate saxophonist in the Stan Getz mould. He has appeared at jazz clubs and festivals throughout Europe, and at the Lincoln Centre in New York and is a long-standing member of the John Wilson Orchestra with which he has played regularly at BBC Proms.
Guitarist Nigel Price is of course one of the unsung heroes of the British Jazz Scene with over 500 appearances at Ronnie Scott’s, 3 years with the James Taylor Quartet and winner of the British Jazz Awards and Parliamentary Jazz Awards.
The band also features John Cervantes on piano, whose strong roots in the swinging jazz tradition are overlaid with classical and world music influences in, as he puts it, his “quest to express those undefinable flashes of life, creation, emotion & passion that make music so powerful”. His appearance at some of the biggest jazz festivals in the country and on the 2025 BBC Proms bear testament to his success!
Percussionist Demi Garcia Sabat brings a wealth of experience in Flamenco, Jazz, Arabic, Latin, Iberian Folk, and pop music, having toured all over Europe, North Africa, and USA, with Marianne Windham, the founder of Guildford Jazz and a well-respected and in demand player, completing the lineup on double bass.

Alan Barnes Octet presents “Copperfield” ** SOLD OUT **
“Like the Dickens classic itself, Alan Barnes’ “Copperfield” has something for everyone. A great night out that is also a treat for the jazz connoisseur; it will delight anyone who loves music or literature – or just being entertained!”
This new set takes the audience through the characters and scenes of ‘David Copperfield’, told in Alan Barnes’ own inimitable style with his charismatic, engaging humour. After each sketch, eight virtuoso musicians bring the characters and scenes to life, switching audiences from hilarity to pathos with a skill that would have done credit to Dickens himself!
Alan Barnes is one of our greatest jazz musicians, winning many awards, playing clarinet, alto & baritone saxophones, both in smaller intimate jazz clubs and on larger concert hall stages with equal creativity, all with his unique and warm style of presentation rich in anecdotal humour. He is also an outstanding music writer and arranger, with two previous, brilliant jazz suites playing to packed houses in the EFG London Jazz Festival. Tonight he is joined by an outstanding ensemble of highly- awarded British Jazz greats.
“Barnes is a true Dickensian. He is a serious reader of the novels. It is a clear blunder of providence that he was born too late to appear in their pages!”
This event has been scheduled to coincide with the Guildford Shakespeare Company’s adaptation of David Copperfield which runs from February 6-28 at Holy Trinity Church . Why not see the play and remind yourself of all those wonderful Dickens characters before coming to the gig and hearing Alan Barnes’ musical depiction of them ? A previous winner of the tenor sax category in the British Jazz Awards, recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Worshipful Company of Musicians and shortlisted for the Jazz Instrumentalist of the year in the recent Parliamentary Jazz Awards, this living legend has famously combined his role as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with saxophone duties in the bands of Alexis Korner and Stan Tracey as well as recordings with Joe Cocker, Jack Bruce and even Bing Crosby. Described by THE OBSERVER as "One of the tiny handful of undeniably perfect jazz musicians”, he remains as brilliant and inimitable as ever.
Themen’s organ trio features organist Pete Whittaker, formerly of The Nigel Price Organ Trio, and drummer George Double who has worked as sideman to Shirley Bassey and Jack Jones. The band’s groove-led re-imaginings of quirky curiosities from the jazz canon act as a perfect vehicle for the twinkly mischief of this genuine grandee of British jazz and have delighted crowds at over 100 gigs at Ronnie Scott’s, The Royal Albert Hall’s Elgar Room, the 606 club in Chelsea and across the UK.
"One of the most distinguished trios on Britain's scene today" JAZZ RAG
"I heard this band and thought them a wow..the total performance a joy" JAZZWISE

The performance is upstairs in the Pavilion building at the Guildford County Cricket Club, The Sports Ground, Woodbridge Road, Guildford GU1 4RP
For sat navs please check the postcode takes you to Wharf Road. There’s a car park alongside, entry from Wharf Road. If you’re approaching from Guildford town centre, Wharf Road is on the left just before the Sports Ground. If you’re approaching from the A3/Ladymead there’s no right turn into Wharf Road, but continue to the next roundabout to double back.
The car park next to the Pavilion holds about 40 cars (to enable emergency access, cars can only park in the marked bays). Unless it’s very wet, the overflow car park at the far end of the Cricket ground will be open.
To access the overflow car park, turn left as you come out of Wharf Road and carry on along Woodbridge Road towards the railway bridge, and the entrance to the ground is just before the end of the green fence that runs along the perimeter of the ground, next to the Woodbridge Café.
You might prefer to use one of the larger public car parks which are just a few minutes walk away: the open air Mary Road Car Park (GU1 4QU) or multi-storey Bedford Road Car Park (GU1 4SJ)
