Alan Barnes Octet presents “Copperfield”
“Like the Dickens classic itself, Alan Barnes’ “Copperfield” has something for everyone. A great night out that is also a treat for the jazz connoisseur; it will delight anyone who loves music or literature – or just being entertained!”
This new set takes the audience through the characters and scenes of ‘David Copperfield’, told in Alan Barnes’ own inimitable style with his charismatic, engaging humour. After each sketch, eight virtuoso musicians bring the characters and scenes to life, switching audiences from hilarity to pathos with a skill that would have done credit to Dickens himself!
Alan Barnes is one of our greatest jazz musicians, winning many awards, playing clarinet, alto & baritone saxophones, both in smaller intimate jazz clubs and on larger concert hall stages with equal creativity, all with his unique and warm style of presentation rich in anecdotal humour. He is also an outstanding music writer and arranger, with two previous, brilliant jazz suites playing to packed houses in the EFG London Jazz Festival. Tonight he is joined by an outstanding ensemble of highly- awarded British Jazz greats.
“Barnes is a true Dickensian. He is a serious reader of the novels. It is a clear blunder of providence that he was born too late to appear in their pages!”

“Their love of music and samba oozed from every note played, and the final encore & applause reflected the joy given out by them to a very grateful audience” - Ronnie Scott’s

Bill Bruford: In Conversation & the Pete Roth Trio
A unique evening with legendary prog-jazz drummer and Guildford Jazz Patron BILL BRUFORD, in conversation with Guildford Mayor HOWARD SMITH (former drummer of the UK Group The Vapors), followed by a performance from the Pete Roth Trio featuring Bill Bruford on drums, Pete Roth on guitar and Mike Pratt on bass.
PRT strives for an intimate, relatively unscripted music that thrives in small places and dark corners. Jazz, funk, contemporary classical, Dvořák. Nothing is sacred. It’s not retro. It’s not comfortable. It’s just brilliantly unruly.

WHO'S PLAYING?
The Pete Roth Trio, featuring Pete on guitar, Mike Pratt on bass, and the incomparable Bill Bruford on drums offers a near-jazz experience that is intimate, improvised, and deeply interactive. The music unfolds as a conversation between players and audience, where every performance becomes a unique exploration of sound, texture, and connection.
Roth’s original compositions, such as Dancing with Grace, the Trio’s collaborative works like Part of the Charm and Looking Forward to Looking Back, or their reinterpretation of masterworks such as Dvořák’s Largo from Symphony No. 9, offer just a few gateways into the creative world of the Pete Roth Trio, a world that will likely reshape your perspective on what the guitar trio format can achieve.Like the Dickens classic itself, Alan Barnes’ “Copperfield” has something for everyone. A great night out that is also a treat for the jazz connoisseur; it will delight anyone who loves music or literature – or just being entertained!”

Christmas Auction for CKT
A one-off opportunity to own a framed photo of saxophonist Tony Kofi taken by award winning photographer John Lyons in aid of the Cheryl King Trust, supporting young musicians from low income families.
** BIDDING CLOSES AT MIDNIGHT ON 11/12/2025, WINNING BID CURRENTLY AT OVER £170 "**
Tony Kofi at the Pheasantry, Chelsea, March 2023
“Tony is one of the UK’s leading saxophonists, composers and band leaders, and has twice won the BBC Jazz Awards. I have photographed Tony a few times over the years, both in groups where he was leading and where he was performing with other singers. This shot was taken of him performing with jazz singer Lauren Lucille.
For most of the show, Tony stood out of the spotlight towards the back of the small stage and I was keen to get shot of him as he moved out of the dark into the spotlight.
So, when he stepped forward for a brief moment during a solo, I clicked the shutter and caught this shot. You can see the darkness across the right hand side of the image as he is partially lit up by the spotlight.”

The Christmas Project and Clare Wheeler **SOLD OUT **
The Christmas Project is an exciting international band led by recording artist and an internationally touring Dutch jazz vocalist, Henk Kraaijeveld , and pianist Jan Willem van Delft, recording artist and well established in the gospel and jazz scene in the Netherlands.
Featuring many well known Christmas tunes , the arrangements also combine musical styles from all over the world, and brings together Henk and Jan’s love for jazz, gospel, vocal polyphony and Christmas music!
The band also features UK vocalist Clare Wheeler, a renowned composer, arranger, singer, and educator who has toured with the five-time Grammy-winning vocal group The Swingles and whose impressive performing career includes collaborations with artists like Jamie Cullum, Labrinth, and Jacob Collier, and appearances on TV and radio programs such as Pitch Battle and The Choir.
Following the success of Comfort & Joy, The Christmas Project’s debut album, Henk Kraaijeveld and Jan Willem van Delft joined forces with Clare Wheeler to present a moving new arrangement of the 16th-century English song The Coventry Carol. Telling the story of the Massacre of the Innocents from Matthew’s gospel, it reflects the mothers’ grief at King Herod’s decree to kill all boys under two – a tragedy that still resonates today. This haunting yet bittersweet reimagining blends English and Arabic lyrics in a tender lullaby, featuring the intricate vocals of London-based Egyptian singer Amena Elabd and a global virtual choir whose participants donated to Save the Children, raising over £2000 in just a few weeks. The track will be released in early November 2025 and their performance at our Christmas Concert will be the premiere of this release!
Also featuring one of the UK’s most in-demand jazz drummers, Steve Brown, with local jazz anchor Marianne Windham completing the line-up on double bass.
It’s been said many times before: music connects people all over the world and Christmas is THE time of the year that brings people together all over the world.
“We grew up with this tradition and love to connect with people from various cultural and musical backgrounds. Through these elements we believe we become more human. Among the great treasure of songs we selected the ones that speak to us most through their joyful melodies and comforting lyrics. And gave them a little twist here and there.”

Bill Laurance TRIO ** SOLD OUT**
From the stunning solo piano recording, Affinity (2022), and the intimate duo recording Keeping Company (2024, ACT Music) together with Michael League, to the expansive collaboration with the WDR Big Band Live at the Philharmonie Cologne album (2019) to the symphonic and critically acclaimed Bloom LP, recorded with The Untold Orchestra (2024) – there are few creative avenues that the industrious musician is yet to explore.
That continued inspiration has led to the formation of Laurance’s new trio, featuring drummer Oscar Ogden (Doom Cannon / Charlie Stacey) and bassist Menelik Claffey (Byron Wallen / Secret Night Gang). The trio have developed a musical kinship, which has seen new influences and instrumentation added to the sonic palette.

Nick Smart Quintet feat. Emma Rawicz - The Musical Life of Kenny Wheeler
Trumpeter and composer Kenny Wheeler (1930–2014) was one of the most enigmatic and influential musicians in recent memory. His instantly recognisable sound was a driving force within every major innovation in modern European jazz during the last half of the 20th century.
After Kenny’s death in 2014, Nick Smart, Head of Jazz at the Royal Academy of Music and an internationally renowned jazz educator, trumpeter and musical director, embarked on a 10 year labour of love to produce a biography of Kenny Wheeler which manages to take in its stride the vast amount of work he undertook in a long career, and to cast light on the individuality of his playing and writing styles. Published earlier this year by Equinox Publishing, this exemplary biography is as much a perspective on the history and development of jazz in Britain and Europe as it is the extraordinary tale of this improbable pioneer.
In collaboration with Guildford Book Festival, we are delighted to welcome Nick Smart and his stellar band which also features rising star EMMA RAWICZ on tenor saxophone (Winner of Jazz Newcomer of the Year at the 2022 Parliamentary Jazz Awards and BBC Young Musician Jazz finalist ), and renowned guitarist JOHN PARRICELLI, to celebrate the music and life of Kenny Wheeler in words and music.

WHO'S PLAYING?
Nick Smart - Trumpet/Flugel
Head of Jazz at the Royal Academy of Music, Nick Smart is an internationally renowned jazz educator, trumpeter and musical director who has given guest masterclasses and performances around the world. In 2013 he was the winner of the prestigious Parliamentary Award for Jazz Education. In the UK he is recognised as one of the leading musicians on the London jazz scene, where as well as being in regular demand as a sideman to players of all generations, he continues to record and tour with his own projects.
In 2005 Nick released his debut album “Remembering Nick Drake” to critical acclaim. The album featured Smart’s arrangements of Nick Drake’s music played by an all star line-up including John Parricelli, Paul Clarvis, Christine Tobin and Stan Sulzmann amongst others. It was described by Straight No Chaser magazine as “…a future classic because it really captures all that is best about British jazz….” and by John Fordham in Jazz UK as “…fascinating music devoted to a fascinating inspiration.” In December 2008 Nick released his highly praised trio album “Remembering Louis Armstrong” featuring Hans Koller and Paul Clarvis. His latest band, Nick Smart’s Trogon, merges contemporary jazz sounds with Afro Cuban concepts and is due for release on Babel Records in November 2013.
His versatility as a trumpet player has allowed him to perform alongside many international jazz stars including George Russell, Bob Brookmeyer, John Hollenbeck, the New York Voices, Mike Gibbs and Dave Douglas, as well as most of the leading names on the UK jazz scene. Amongst other things Nick is currently a member of the Kenny Wheeler Big Band, in a new quartet from saxophonist Stan Sulzmann and just recorded for the new album of vocalist Christine Tobin in her interpretations of Leonard Cohen songs. As an acclaimed musical director of large ensembles, Nick conducts the Stan Sulzmann Big Band (Neon Orchestra) and the Troyka large ensemble, “Troykestra”. He also performs internationally as the regular soloist with the James Taylor Quartet.
Emma Rawicz - Tenor Saxophone
Jamie Cullum calls British saxophonist Emma Rawicz "an astonishing talent", Jazzwise Magazine "a force to be reckoned with", and the BBC: "the name Emma Rawicz is on everyone's lips right now".
Despite her young age of 22, she has already achieved an enormous amount: at 19 Rawicz independently released her critically acclaimed debut album, “Incantation” and singlehandedly managed an extensive UK release tour, including headline appearances at prestigious venues including the Jazz Cafe and Ronnie Scott's. Since then her international career has flourished, playing in over 15 countries, with extensive tours in Germany and Scandinavia in particular. In 2023 she made her label debut with one of the most important jazz labels in the world today, ACT, releasing her album “Chroma” to international acclaim, notably with the album being selected as the Guardian Album of the Month: “With ‘Chroma’ young British jazz star Emma Rawicz is taking admirable risks and continuing her warp-speed evolution ****” .
Rawicz’s achievements have been recognised: she is a winner of a Parliamentary Jazz Award, finalist at the Jazz FM Awards and the BBC Young Jazz Musician Competition. The Royal Academy of Music recently awarded Rawicz the Musician’s Company Silver Medal for excellence and contribution to the institution, an award not previously given to a jazz student.
Rawicz’s musical endeavours are broad: she tours with a range of projects, from duo with internationally renowned pianist Gwilym Simcock, to her regular touring quartet made up of stars of the UK jazz scene, to her 20-piece Jazz Orchestra, which she singlehandedly manages as well as composing and arranging exciting original music.
Rawicz has already had the privilege of working in important roles with some high profile festivals and established ensembles: in 2023 she was the Cambridge Jazz Festival’s Artist in Residence, a role that involved multiple appearances in the festival programme, culminating in a concert leading the Cambridge University Jazz Orchestra in a triumphant end to the festival, playing an all-original programme of Rawicz’s jazz orchestra music as well as a brand new commission for the ensemble. In addition to this, she has featured as a soloist with the BBC Concert Orchestra at Queen Elizabeth Hall in the 2022 London Jazz Festival, and with the German SWR Radio Big Band at a sold out Berlin Philharmonie in February 2024.
Rawicz is also a passionate educator, and is already in demand as a masterclass leader, most recently leading workshops in Denmark, Lithuania and Norway, as well as having a strong educational presence in the UK for musicians of all ages.
John Parricelli - Guitar
Parricelli began his career as a guitarist in 1982 and was one of the founding members of the British big band Loose Tubes, with whom he recorded three albums. He has worked with Annie Whitehead, Kenny Wheeler, Norma Winstone, Lee Konitz, Paul Motian, Tim Whitehead, Chris Laurence, Eddie Parker, Peter Erskine, Vince Mendoza, Mark Lockheart, Julian Argüelles, Iain Ballamy's Acme, Mark Lockheart Quartet, Andy Sheppard, Gerard Presencer, Colin Towns, Martin Speake Quintet and Jazz singer Stacey Kent among others.
James Maddren - Drums
James Maddren is a London, UK-based drummer and composer who hails from Horsham, Sussex, where at age 11 started school at Christ’s Hospital performing in many contrasting bands and orchestras. In 2004 while still at school he traveled to London to study with one of Europe’s top multi-instrumentalists, Jim Hart, who Maddren cites as a significant early influence and inspiration. He went on to study jazz percussion at the Royal Academy of Music with Martin France as his drum tutor. Graduating in 2009 with a 1st class degree James was also given ‘The Principal’s Award For Outstanding Studentship’.
Currently one of the UK’s (and increasingly Mainland Europe’s) first-call young drummers, he enjoys listening to and performing all kinds of music and has shared the stage with many artists and ensembles, including the Gwilym Simcock, Kit Downes Trio, Jacob Collier, Marc Copland/Stan Sulzman Quartet, The Mark McKnight Organ Quartet featuring Seamus Blake, Ivo Neame Group, Phil Donkin, Alex Garnett’s Bunch of Five, Michael Janisch, Will Vinson, Martin Speake Quartet, Phronesis, Jonathan Bratoeff Quartet, Nikkie Iles, Norma Winstone, among others.
Steve Watts - Bass
STEVE WATTS has been playing jazz on the British scene for over 25 years. Whilst studying classical double bass at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, Steve discovered jazz and left immediately. He has worked with many musicians of international stature, including: Django Bates, Iain Ballamy, Julian Arguelles, Kenny Wheeler, Stan Sulzman, Jim Mullen, Joe Lovano, Kirk Lightsey, Richard Rodney Bennett, Thomas Stonen, Peter Erskine, Norma Winstone, Gordon Beck, Phil Woods, Bobby Wellins and Adam Nussbaum. In the late 80’s he was a member of Loose Tubes, has remained closely associated with many of its leading figures and plays with them still. His wonderful bass playing has always underpinned these groups with unwavering strength.
He is a committed educator and currently teaches at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
About the book
Trumpeter and composer Kenny Wheeler (1930–2014) was one of the most enigmatic and influential musicians in recent memory. His instantly recognisable sound was a driving force within every major innovation in modern European jazz during the last half of the 20th century.
More importantly, his life provides us with a profound example of the way music can manifest itself in the most unlikely of vessels. As a lonely and shy teenager in Canada, he sought refuge from his difficult home life in the friendships he forged through a mutual love of bebop. After an unexpectedly bold move to London at the age of 22, he struggled with his confidence for years before making his first big break with the John Dankworth Orchestra. Kenny would soon find his voice in a triumvirate of musical communities: straight-ahead jazz, the burgeoning free scene, and in the busy recording studios.
Throughout his life, he constantly pursued personal growth while investing in his friends from every corner of the music business who would bring the inimitable beauty, precision, and chaos in his compositions to life. And in an artform where individuality represents the highest level of expression, Kenny was peerless. Indeed, few jazz artists of any era developed such a fingerprint in one area, let alone becoming immediately identifiable as virtuoso instrumentalists, improvisors, and composers.
Kenny Wheeler’s life is a compelling – and fundamentally human – story. This book brings together over 130 original interviews and new archival and biographical research on Wheeler’s life and music, chronicling his journey from small town Canada to international acclaim. It is as much a perspective on the history and development of jazz in Britain and Europe as it is the extraordinary tale of this improbable pioneer.

New Orleans Jazz: The Alvar Tree Frogs
A rare opportunity to step inside Abbot’s Hospital with live jazz in the Courtyard from The Alvar Treefrogs !
Born out of an idea to breathe life into music long forgotten, music that made the streets of New Orleans a place to dance and party to in the 20s, 30s and 40s, music that is so hip you’ll want to hop around and dance to it.
The band was born on Alvar Street, New Orleans, where one night, tired and happy, we listened to the Treefrogs singing their song. It then took 8 years to find the right musicians and to get the music just right. The players needed to swing, sing and love a frog based pun. We found them!!! Ever wanted to sing about eggs and butter, about Garbage Men, about your Aunt Tilly? We are your band!!
Entry is free, just come in and listen anytime between 2.15 and 4pm
