A unique evening with legendary prog-jazz drummer and Guildford Jazz Patron BILL BRUFORD who set the standard for creative rock drumming with Yes and King Crimson before returning to his first love, jazz, with multiple editions of his band Earthworks and now with the Pete Roth Trio.
This performance includes a pre-concert interview with Bill Bruford from Guildford Mayor HOWARD SMITH (former drummer of the UK Group The Vapors), followed by a performance from the Pete Roth Trio featuring Bill Bruford on drums, Pete Roth on guitar and Mike Pratt on bass.
PRT strives for an intimate, relatively unscripted music that thrives in small places and dark corners. Jazz, funk, contemporary classical, Dvořák. Nothing is sacred. It’s not retro. It’s not comfortable. It’s just brilliantly unruly.

WHO'S PLAYING?
The Pete Roth Trio, featuring Pete on guitar, Mike Pratt on bass, and the incomparable Bill Bruford on drums offers a near-jazz experience that is intimate, improvised, and deeply interactive. The music unfolds as a conversation between players and audience, where every performance becomes a unique exploration of sound, texture, and connection.
Roth’s original compositions, such as Dancing with Grace, the Trio’s collaborative works like Part of the Charm and Looking Forward to Looking Back, or their reinterpretation of masterworks such as Dvořák’s Largo from Symphony No. 9, offer just a few gateways into the creative world of the Pete Roth Trio, a world that will likely reshape your perspective on what the guitar trio format can achieve.
Bill Bruford
Bill Bruford first gained prominence as a founding member of the progressive rock band Yes. After leaving Yes in 1972, Bruford spent the rest of the 1970s recording and touring with King Crimson (1972–1974), Roy Harper (1975), and U.K. (1978), as well as touring with Genesis (1976). In 1978, he formed his own group, Bruford, which was active until 1980.
During the 1980s, Bruford returned to King Crimson for three years (1981–1984), collaborated with several artists (including Patrick Moraz and David Torn), and formed his own electric jazz band Earthworks in 1986. He then played with his former Yes bandmates in Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe, which eventually led to a very brief second stint in Yes. Bruford played in King Crimson for his third and final tenure from 1994 to 1997, then continued with a new acoustic configuration of Earthworks.
In 2009, Bruford announced his retirement from professional drumming. He pursued other projects, including the operation of his two record labels, Summerfold and Winterfold, releasing an autobiography, and speaking and writing about music. In 2016, Bruford received a PhD in Music from the University of Surrey. That year, Bruford ranked No. 16 on Rolling Stone's list of the "100 Greatest Drummers of All Time".In 2017, Bruford was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Yes.[In 2022, after a 13-year hiatus, he returned to live performance as a member of the Pete Roth Trio.
