August Lunchtime Jazz: Phil Hopkins “Toots Thieleman’s Legacy”

  • The Guildford Institute Ward Street Guildford, England, GU1 4LH United Kingdom (map)

Internationally-known chromatic harmonica player and percussionist Phil Hopkins and his trio celebrate the richly-varied musical output of the greatest jazz harmonica player Toots Thielemans (1922-2016).

In a long career, Thielemans’ expressive harmonica added magic to the recordings of a pantheon of jazz greats including Benny Goodman, Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny, Quincy Jones and many more. In this concert, Phil Hopkins traces Toots’ career in a musical travelogue from Brussels to New York and Rio – via Sesame Street!

Phil is joined by the fantastic pianist Liam Dunachie and Marianne Windham on bass. Expect an hour of glorious swing, samba and stories of the life and times of Toots who described his music as 'between a smile and a tear'.

‘Phil Hopkins is a veritable virtuoso of the chromatic harmonica.’ Jazz Journal

The lunchtime jazz is held in the Cafe at the Guildford Institute, which boasts a baby grand piano as well as delicious food. Food is served from 12 to 2pm, followed by live jazz performance from 2pm to 3pm
