Martin Shaw is one of the top jazz trumpet soloists in the country. He plays in an extraordinary range of settings, from big band to quartet, cutting edge jazz to contemporary pop and funk. He has worked with most of the leading jazz artists of the last 40 years including Cleo Laine, Sir John Dankworth, Pete King, and Tim Garland. His big band work includes the BBC Big Band and the Michel Legrand Jazz Orchestra.
Along with session and TV work Martin still finds time to perform with classical ensembles and in West End shows. Martin has recorded, performed live and toured extensively with various pop artists including Sting, Jamiroquai, Natalie Cole, Paul Young and the Brand New Heavies.
Also featuring Robin Aspland on piano - without a doubt one of the UK's greatest jazz musicians . His skills have led him to regular touring and recording with the finest of our players: Dave O'Higgins, Cleo Lane, Claire Martin, Iain Ballamy etc.. Robin was also a first-call sideman for such late-greats as Ronnie Scott, John Dankworth and Kenny Wheeler. In addition to having worked with just about everybody on the UK jazz scene, Robin also spent six years as Musical Director for Van Morrison, recording and touring the world in that band.
The lunchtime jazz is held in the Cafe at the Guildford Institute, which boasts a baby grand piano as well as delicious food. Food is served from 12 to 2pm, followed by live jazz performance from 2pm to 3pm

The café – V Café at the Institute – has been run by Nick Humble since 2019. Joined by his friendly team, they offer a welcoming space to relax, have a coffee, and enjoy delicious vegetarian and vegan lunches. The regularly changing menu is based on seasonal, locally-sourced produce. Their vegetables are grown by The Halow Project and they also offer freshly-roasted Surrey Hills coffee..
