The lunchtime jazz performances are held at Guildford Institute Cafe, which boasts a baby grand piano as well as delicious food! Lunch is served from 12 to 2pm, followed by live jazz performance from 2pm to 3pm

The café – V Café at the Institute – has been run by Nick Humble since 2019. Joined by his friendly team, they offer a welcoming space to relax, have a coffee, and enjoy delicious vegetarian and vegan lunches. The regularly changing menu is based on seasonal, locally-sourced produce. Their vegetables are grown by The Halow Project and they also offer freshly-roasted Surrey Hills coffee.. WHO'S PLAYING?
Andrea Vicari - piano
Pianist and composer Andrea Vicari was born in Miami (Florida) and grew up in Birmingham (England). Educated at Cardiff University she won a scholarship to study at The Guildhall School of Music in London.
Recent performances have been the 2 piano Steinway jazz festival at the Pizza Express Dean St and the Ipswich Jazz festival with the all female band led by Andrea called the ‘Jazz Ambassadors’ featuring rising star Emma Rawicz on saxophone and vocalist Paola Vera. Andrea has appearanced at Teignmouth jazz festival with ‘The New Jazz Extempore band’ with trumpeter Yazz Ahmed and played at Ronnie Scott’s as part of the Jazz piano trio festival. Performances outside the UK have included China, Croatia, Italy, France, Holland and Bulgaria. Andrea has also played with jazz legends Eddie Harris, Art Farmer and appeared at Glastonbury festival.
A prolific composer, with 7 albums under her own name, she has been commissioned by the Arts Council, Trinity College Publishing, the BBC, ABRSM, Jazz Umbrella, the Peter Whittingham trust, Lyth Arts (Scotland); and completed a setting of the poetry of A.E Housman for the Ludlow festival, released on the CD New Perspectives. Other projects include The Leasowes Bank festival ; ‘Women in Jazz project’ held at the ‘Hideaway Jazz Club’ during the London jazz festival; Scoring the Chet Baker “Speedball” musical and co-composing a new musical 'The Austerity Playbook' – Andrea’s latest work is a musical about the history of Women’s football ‘110%’ - currently in development.
Andrea works at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance as a senior jazz lecturer on the jazz course and is musical director of her own Jazz summer in the Dordogne (Dordogne Jazz Summer School) now in it’s 20th year. Andrea recently gave a masterclass at Chicago University of Illinois and is an ambassador for NYJO. Previous engagements include judging the UNISA (University of South Africa) jazz piano competition and the Nottingham International Jazz piano competition.
Mat Fisher - drums
Known for his versatility, Matt Fisher is a sought after drummer and percussionist based in London. Matt has performed and collaborated with some of the UK’s most prominent musicians such as; Tina May, Jacqui Dankworth, Najma Akhtar, Nikki Illes, Steve Waterman, Anita Wardell and Christine Tobin. jWorking in a variety of styles from pop and rock, to jazz and orchestral, Matt has toured and performed around the world including; India, USA, Morocco, Mexico and across Europe. Matt is endorsed by Kandu Percussion.
As well as having a busy performing schedule, Matt is teacher of drum kit at St. Paul’s School, and an examiner for Trinity College London. Publications Matt has written include a transcription book on the drummer Tony Williams (Tony Williams – So What 1964 Jazzwise Publications), featuring for the first time a full transcription and analysis of the drummer’s groundbreaking playing in the live version of ‘So What’ from the classic 1964 Miles Davis album; ‘Four and More’. Matt has contributed articles to the Modern Drummer Magazine (USA) and is a product reviewer for Rhythm Magazine (UK).
Matt is always busy collaboratively and current projects include; Dee Byrne’s Entropi, a multi-percussion and piano duo with Australian pianist David Dower, and Rebecca Nash’s Atlas. The wide range of instruments covered across these projects reflects his versatility, including drum set, cajon, electronics, hand percussion, tabla and the one and only, washboard. Sounds textures and grooves, Matt always brings something interesting to the table.
Matt received a First Class Honours degree at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, and completed his Masters degree in Jazz Performance at Trinity College of Music, London. His drum teachers have included Martin France, Clark Tracey, Elliot Bennett, John Marshall, Peter Fairclough, Gene Calderazzo and Dave Wickins.
