2026 marks the Miles Davis centenary and our guest this month is one of the UK’s top jazz trumpet players, Steve Waterman, whose approach to improvisation was much influenced by Miles Davis.
The winner of numerous British Jazz awards, Steve has worked with John Surman, Carla Bley, Andy Sheppard, Tony Coe, Don Weller and many others and has recorded many critically acclaimed CDs under his own name as well as under the ECM label with John Surman’s Brass Project and Carla Bley.
With ALEX HUTTON on piano, and MARIANNE WINDHAM on bass.
The lunchtime jazz is held in the Cafe at the Guildford Institute, which boasts a baby grand piano as well as delicious food. Food is served from 12 to 2pm, followed by live jazz performance from 2pm to 3pm

The café – V Café at the Institute – has been run by Nick Humble since 2019. Joined by his friendly team, they offer a welcoming space to relax, have a coffee, and enjoy delicious vegetarian and vegan lunches. The regularly changing menu is based on seasonal, locally-sourced produce. Their vegetables are grown by The Halow Project and they also offer freshly-roasted Surrey Hills coffee..
