Bobby Wellins, tenor saxophonist and British Jazz legend, was known for his original sound and distinctive style. His contributions and influence have left an indelible mark on the history of British Jazz. Join us for this special evening celebrating Wellins' music and career:
Part I Screening of biopic “Dreams Are Free” charting the rise, fall and redemption of this talented musician, composer and storyteller. Director: Gary Barber
Part II Live Jazz: we are delighted to welcome the cream of British jazz including members of Bobby's last quartet: Spike Wells (drums), Mark Edwards (piano) and Steve Watts (bass). Bobby's part will be played by the great tenor saxophonist Mornington Lockett. They will perform Bobby’s classic compositions and favourite tunes.
Wellins had a long and varied career working with many great artists from Stan Tracey to Ronnie Scott to Charlie Watts. Based in Bognor Regis for 40 years, he played and taught locally also. We are donating proceeds to local charity "Sage House by Dementia Support" who gave invaluable support to Bobby's wife, Isabella, in her later years with dementia.
This event is produced by Bobby's daughter, Fiona Wellins, and Head of Jazz at Chichester University, Dr Nick Reynolds, with support from the University Conservatoire.
